When You Can Look Up, You Can Get Up: FC Birmingham’s Turning Point

The results haven’t gone our way. Not yet. But in a 2025 season defined by setbacks, FC Birmingham is choosing to look deeper, think harder, and lay the foundation for what comes next.

Since our last update, both the UPSL Premier and U23 squads have continued to struggle in the standings. The first team is still seeking its first road win, with a current away record of 0-0-5. As the season nears its final stretch, the odds are long — but not impossible.

The good news? Two of our final three matches are at home.
The challenge? Those opponents are Potros FC, Dalton FC, and UMA FC — three of the strongest sides in the division. In this case, high probability doesn’t mean low difficulty.

New Players, Same Mountain to Climb

Over the past few weeks, both squads have seen a steady flow of new players coming into training. Some have shown promising potential; others, not quite at the level yet. The Premier team has added some strong reinforcements, but consistency remains elusive — especially with veteran players not consistently traveling to road matches.

Coach Josh Martinez continues to manage each match with a shifting lineup, and it shows. Chemistry, rhythm, and cohesion remain hard to build when the core changes weekly.

U23s: A Promising Season Derailed

What began as a hopeful campaign for the U23s has been decimated by injuries, departures, and player promotions. With several of the team’s most experienced players now called up to the first team, the U23 roster has been stretched to its limits.

Despite the setbacks, the developmental value remains. Young players are gaining minutes, the staff is evaluating talent under pressure, and the pipeline between squads remains active — even if it’s being stress-tested like never before.

WPSL Women’s Season Kicks Off

One bright spot in the club’s timeline: the launch of the 2025 WPSL season. This year marks FC Birmingham Women’s fourth season overall and third in the WPSL, a league that continues to grow in competition and visibility.

After a weather delay and a bye week, the team will open its season with back-to-back matches this weekend, including the home opener this Sunday against Nashville Rhythm FC. The squad is eager to get on the field and set the tone for a competitive campaign.

Reflection, Realignment, and Rebuilding Smarter

Club owner Doug Walk spoke candidly about the challenges of this season — and the opportunity within them:

“This has been a wild ride. Injuries, departures, non-commitment — to have it all come to a head in one season is crazy. I take it as GOD trying to get my attention to think deeper about what we’re doing.

Going through turmoil forces you to soul search. It’s made me think about how our teams are structured, what we could do better, and what’s actually worked for us. To keep my sanity through these times, I think about Les Brown — when you fall, fall on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up.

That mindset has already led to internal shifts. The club is actively developing a strategic plan that will realign its systems, support player development more sustainably, and prepare all squads — from the youth academy to the women’s side — for long-term success.

What’s Next

FC Birmingham isn’t ignoring the struggle — we’re studying it. Learning from it. Building through it.

Thank you for continuing with us on the journey.
