All three FC Birmingham teams were in action this past weekend, with moments of celebration and reminders of just how much work remains ahead.
The WPSL Women’s team made their long-awaited 2025 debut and split their opening weekend series — earning a road win on Saturday before falling in a close contest on Sunday. Meanwhile, both the UPSL Premier and U23 squads continued to face elite competition and structural growing pains.
Saturday marked the start of the club’s fourth season for the women’s program and its third in the WPSL — and they delivered early. On the road against Jackson Ignite FC, FCB Women secured a confident 4-2 victory, setting the tone for what could be an exciting campaign.
Less than 24 hours later, the squad faced a quick turnaround against Nashville Rhythm FC, a regional powerhouse. Despite the short rest and tough opponent, the women fought hard in a narrow defeat.
They’ll return home this Saturday at 4 PM, hosting Jackson Ignite FC again — this time at Carver High School. It will be their next chance to earn three points in front of home supporters in 2025.
While the women celebrated a strong opening, the men’s side continued to face growing pains.
The U23s fell to FC Atlanta, a team that competed in the Premier Division last year but chose to self-relegate this season. The experience and quality gap was evident, and with the U23 roster still impacted by call-ups, injuries, and absences, the challenge was steep.
Meanwhile, the Premier team hosted Potros FC, the league’s top-ranked team coming into the weekend. Organized, disciplined, and operating at a high level, Potros showed exactly why they’re considered title contenders. FC Birmingham fought hard, but ultimately came up short.
These matches highlight where the men’s program stands — and where it needs to go.
“Sometimes, you have to tear something completely down to build better and stronger,” said a club staffer after the match. “We’ll save that part of the story for another day — but it’s already underway.”
The U23s will play their final match of the season this weekend on the road against AFC Lightning. It’s the last opportunity to close out what began as a promising season but was derailed by injuries, player movement, and transitions.
The Premier team travels to face Dalton United — another difficult road test in a season full of them. FC Birmingham remains winless away from home this year, and they’ll be looking to change that narrative before the season closes.
This season has tested every layer of FC Birmingham’s structure — from roster depth to player development to the realities of fielding competitive teams in multiple divisions. And yet, the mission remains the same: build better, build stronger.
We’ll continue sharing the behind-the-scenes journey as the club evaluates its structure, strengthens its systems, and prepares for the next chapter.
