FC Birmingham Signs An Assistant Coach
FC Birmingham announced today that former professional soccer player, Carlos Mercado, has been hired as the assistant coach of the club’s top team. The top team will begin to play in the Fall of 2021. Mercado will also serve as the Youth Academy Director for the newly launched FCB Youth Academy.
Carlos Mercado competed in the 2nd and 3rd Pro-divisions with Atlas, Tecos, and Toluca Reserve team. Before coming to Alabama Carlos coached at Leones negros de la universidad de Guadalajara and Atlas. Since then he has coached at Clay-Chalkville High School where his teams qualified for the state playoffs every year except 2020 (COVID-19). During the Fall seasons, Carlos also coached at multiple local clubs over the last 5 years.
When asked about Carlos joining FC Birmingham, Head Coach Preston Goldfarb said, “I’m excited to have Carlos on our coaching staff, as he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our club.”
We asked Carlos what attracted him to FC Birmingham, he expressed, “I identified with the ideas and values of the owner, Doug Walk, about the development of players and am eager to help discover the potential of the players and coaches as well as being able to promote a comprehensive training program. I am greatly attracted by the idea of evolving our own players with our own philosophy and methodology and above all to provide a true integral development. It is a great opportunity to work with FCB and have the opportunity to apply the values and skills I learned while playing through my professional career.”
