FC Birmingham Announces Kat Nichols as Head Coach of Women’s Team
BIRMINGHAM, AL — FC Birmingham is proud to announce the hiring of Kat Nichols as the Head Coach for their Women’s Team. This news follows the program’s January expansion announcement of a United Women’s Soccer (UWS) team based in Birmingham.
Born and raised in Grapevine, Texas, Nichols started playing soccer at the age of 4. Coming up through the club and U.S Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) systems helped her achieve her dream of playing collegiate soccer. Nichols played as a center back for Samford University all four years of her undergrad.
After graduating, she spent 17 years coaching for many of the top-level clubs in the Birmingham area. Nichols is continuing to pursue top-level coaching licenses. She currently holds her USSF C, United Soccer Coaches National Youth, Goalkeeping Level 1, and National Coaching diplomas, while actively pursuing her USC Premier diploma.
“I am honored to have been asked to be the coach of FC Birmingham UWS Team for its inaugural season,” Nichols stated. “This is a great opportunity for females looking to either keep sharp for their college season or to help propel them to the next level. Having the UWS in Birmingham is amazing for the landscape of the women’s game here. The FC Birmingham Women’s team will provide an amazing avenue for older players while showing younger players there is a pathway to continue to play a game they love. Our goal with the team is to give our girls a local team of strong female role models to emulate.”
FC Birmingham is thrilled to have Kat on board! “When we hired Coach Kat, we knew that we wanted to bring on a coach that understood, embraced, and valued our mission and could really coach a team the way it deserved. This opportunity will open doors for generational successes, not only in soccer but for the community as well. This initiative will increase the amount of activity for our female athletes. It’s not solely about injustices but is about creating a pathway to areas of growth in soccer at a higher level.”
Having the first-ever UWS team in Birmingham is a huge accomplishment for the program, and they couldn’t imagine a better head coach to lead the team. “I believe that we have got ourselves a hat trick with Coach Kat! Being the first UWS team in Birmingham, developing a women’s team with a purposeful segway, and bringing aboard a local top female coach all represent influence, positivity, and leadership that we absolutely need. With Coach Kat sharing and embedding her expertise at a professional level will tear down many barriers we are excited to see. We feel that Coach Kat can give visibility and empowerment to the game of soccer and to our female athletes.”
The team will hold open tryouts on Saturday, April 2 through Sunday, April 3 at the Carver High School Stadium. Players can sign up for tryouts at this link and are encouraged to do so in advance of the upcoming sessions. Please direct any questions concerning tryouts to info@fcbirmingham.com!
